How do we love thee, Homer? Let us count the “d’ohs.” The Simpsons first got their start on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987, getting their own series in 1989—a series which still runs today. Patriarch Homer Simpson, voiced by Dan Castellaneta and named for creator Matt Groening’s father, has become a cultural icon of comedy. Further, Homer and his family have spawned a slew of merchandise that defines the end of the 20^th century with its abundance. Homer is perhaps best known for his “d’oh” catchphrase, but just how did the “d’oh” evolve? Inspired by the Laurel and Hardy comedy, Castellaneta explains that this “annoyed grunt” inadvertently comes from an abridged version of “damn.” Here Dan Castellaneta explains how he develops the “d’oh” for the series. One of its first flagship shows, Married…With Children premiered on FOX in 1987, bringing a whole new meaning to the idea of family dystopia. Running for eleven seasons until 1997, it ranks among Time Magazine’s 100 best shows of all-time. Sagal played oversexed wife Peg Bundy to O’Neill’s permanently sullen Al Bundy. They were a dystrophic June and Ward Cleaver for the 1990s, bringing in huge ratings for the network. Both Sagal and O’Neill continue to work today—Sagal plays another matriarch on FX’s Sons of Anarchy, while O’Neill heads another family over on ABC’s Modern Family.

Wayans was one of the stars and creators of FOX’s highly successful sketch comedy show, In Living Color, which ran from 1990 to 1994. The comedian produced, wrote, and starred in various sketches, including the notorious Homey D. Clown. Homey was known for quipping “Homey don’t play that” when asked to do things such as happily entertain children. Wayans went on to star in 2001 on the highly successful ABC show My Wife and Kids and continues to write and perform today.

Produced by Aaron Spelling, the first incarnation of Beverly Hills, 90210 was a ratings juggernaut for FOX. Running from 1990 to 2000, it made stars out of most of its cast. Carrying the mantle of “bad boy dreamboat” was Luke Perry, who played handsomely troubled and infamous virgin deflowerer Dylan McKay. Perry also became infamous for being one of the oldest teenagers on TV, as he was in his mid-20s when he first played 16-year old Dylan. Recently, he appeared in a Western for the Hallmark Channel called Goodnight for Justice: The Measure of a Man. (Until it was re-imagined by FOX with a new cast in 2009). The hugely successful show remembered the days of Dynasty and Dallas, reminded us as to why we love prime time soaps. Part of the show’s great success was due to Heather Locklear’s impossibly delicious evil ad exec, Amanda Woodward. When Locklear made a guest appearance on the show’s 2009 reboot, its executives could barely contain their excitement. The X-Files, which ran from 1993 to 2002, helped redefine science fiction on television and made stars of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny. It also gave new meaning to catch phrases such as “the truth is out there” and “I want to believe” and spawned an empire of merchandise. Anderson’s skeptical Scully and Duchovny’s wild Mulder proved the perfect foils to keep the show so successful. The series spawned a huge following and two films, including 1998’s The X-Files and 2008’s The X Files: I Want to Believe. Will there be a third film? Anderson recently confirmed that there is talk of another movie, and she hopes it may be a little different. “We talked about that for a long time but maybe after three features we could get to do a spoof feature,” she told reporters in 2011. Party of Five was the story of the tragic Salinger family, five children who were forced to band together after their parents’ death. It ran from 1994 to 2000. The show helped bring more critical acclaim to FOX, who almost cancelled the show just before it was nominated as Best Drama for the Golden Globes. It made a star of Neve Campbell, who played sensitive 15-year old Julia. Her character dealt with heavy issues, including a teen pregnancy. Campbell went on to appear in the Scream movie franchise and will next be seen in the TV series, Titanic: Blood and Steel.

Before Ally McBeal premiered on FOX in 1997, the world was unacquainted with thin lawyers in the shortest skirts whose biological clocks were personified by dancing babies. David E. Kelley’s eccentric dramedy about young, attractive lawyers was all about romance and heartbreak, with an occasional legal story thrown in the drive the plot. The show was highly successful, running until 2002. It made a star out of Calista Flockhart, who was called an image of postmodern feminism. She also received a lot of coverage in the press about her emaciated weight throughout filming. As she told People Magazine in 1998, "Though I may not feel like a role model, I recognize the responsibility." She went on to add, “But I also have to be who I am. I can't go out and gain weight and be somebody I'm not in order to be a better role model.” Today, Flockhart is happy, healthy, and married to actor Harrison Ford. Jessica Walters starred as Lucille Bluth, the boozy matriarch of the insanely dysfunctional Bluth family in the critically-acclaimed Arrested Development, which aired from 2003 to 2006. Listed in 2007 as one of the 100 best shows of all time by Time, the Mitch Hurwitz-produced series has obtained a cult-following. Much of this has to do with Walter’s portrayal of Lucille as a “Mommie Dearest” with a martini, who offers up controlling issues to her flailing family as easy as an iceberg offers up cubes. But Walters would like it to be known that she’s no Bluth. As she told Entertainment Weekly in 2006, “I’m nothing like Lucille. Nothing. My daughter will tell you. I'm really a very nice, boring person.” Though she does admit to enjoying an occasional martini. “Damn you, vile woman!” Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy has been a gigantic success for FOX, but they didn’t know it at first. The show first went into production in 1998, only to be cancelled by the network in 2001. Excellent DVD sales and fan support brought the show back in 2004, where it has remained ever since. While the show featured another dystrophic family, the Griffins, it is the youngest member of the family who is perhaps its break-out star. Diabolical genius baby Stewie, initially obsessed with killing mother Lois, has provides quips ahoy for fans. Stewie has proven to be another merchandising juggernaut for FOX—after all, who doesn’t want a Stewie Griffin knit hat demanding people to obey you? Debuting on FOX in 2005, Bones is the crime drama depicting the shenanigans of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan and her co-hort, F.B.I. Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz). The show, which was just renewed for an eighth season, has been a highly successful production for FOX, drawing in almost a cult-like following amongst its watchers. Just why has the character of Bones resonated so much?
