15 Years of Coachella! Past Headliner Bands – Where Are They Now?

The Flaming Lips—Coachella 2004

Already famous for their live shows, in 2004 The Flaming Lips made history and by launching their lead singer, Wayne Coyne, into the crowd inside of a giant, man-sized plastic bubble. He crowd surfed his way into the unofficial Coachella hall of fame and The Flaming Lips has been associated with the signature bubble ever since.

True to form, in 2012, they broke Jay Z's Guinness World Record of 8 live shows in 24 hours and live streamed the whole thing.

Aphex Twin—Coachella 2001

Aphex Twin joined other early aughts staples like Weezer, The Chemical Brothers and Sigur Ros at Coachella in 2001.

Aphex Twin—NOW

After playing Coachella again in 2008, Aphex Twin has created multiple series of music, side projects and occasional touring. In a 2010 interview, he mentioned that he’s completed at least six albums, none of which have yet been released.

The Verve—Coachella 2008

Actually an older headliner band at the time, The Verve still had a strong following after their single "Bittersweet Symphony" from their 1997 album Urban Hymns enjoyed an almost unreal level of international success. Cruel Intentions, anyone?

Since their 2008 reunion and Coachella headliner set, The Verve went "on holiday" for a third time in 2009, and in 2010, the lead singer Richard Ashcroft made a statement that the band was "over for good" but did not rule out another reunion... Coachella 2015?

Oasis—Coachella 2002

Going through their catalog of hits, Oasis rocked Coachella in 2002 and played new tracks from their upcoming album Heathen Chemistry.

The occasionally feuding brothers, Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis, have had a tumultuous relationship throughout the years with the band finally calling it quits in 2009. Since then, Noel performed Coachella again in 2012 with his band Noel Gallagher and The High-Flying Birds and Liam has been performing with his band Beady Eye.

The White Stripes—Coachella 2003

The White Stripes rocked Coachella with songs off their most recent album Elephant. Even though it was just Meg and Jack, clothed in their usual red, the two gave a magnetic performance.

Even after several successful albums, worldwide tours and critical and commercial success, The White Stripes sadly ended things in 2011. Jack’s now doing solo material with his debut Blunderbuss in 2012. His second will be released in the summer of 2014. Since The White Stripes, Meg, however, hasn’t done much in the music scene since.

Weezer—Coachella 2005

In 2005, Weezer was riding the wave to the top following the popularity of The Green Album. They had recorded a lot of new material for their new album Make Believe and the buzz around their number one hit "Beverly Hills" made them an obvious choice to headline 2005's Coachella.

Since their Coachella performance, Weezer has continued to make music and tour with other bands. You may remember their cover of "I'm A Believer" for the 2010 hit movie Shrek Forever After. In 2014, they started working on their ninth studio album.

Nine Inch Nails—Coachella 2005

Nine Inch Nails was already a hugely famous band, led by Trent Reznor and his fueled by personal demons set to industrial rock and electronica. Their 2005 Coachella headline show at Coachella was a peak during touring that year, launching them into superfamedom.

After a number of other successful albums, Reznor pursued other ventures which includes bagging an Oscar for Best Original Score for The Social Network.

Fatboy Slim—Coachella 2001

Coming off his third studio album Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, Fatboy Slim performed at Coachella in 2001.

Fatboy Slim—NOW

After a bit of a lull, Fatboy Slim returned with a couple hits including “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat” last Fall. He’s been touring again throughout Europe and hosts a radio show. He’ll be at Coachella this year and other music festivals during 2014.

Death Cab For Cutie—Coachella 2008

The band hasn't really slowed up since their Coachella headliner performance. They're a regular Grammy Awards nominee and as of October 2013, the band is reportedly working on their eighth studio album together.

Bjork—Coachella 2002

The Icelandic goddess Bjork performed at Coachella in 2002 in a flowing white dress, focusing on much of her previous album Vespertine, to an energetic crowd.

Since then, Bjork performed at Coachella again in 2007. She’s put out 3 more albums including her last, Biophilia, in 2011 which had interactive elements to it. There’s been no word if she’s working on new music.

The Cure—Coachella 2009

After losing some momentum and a few band members in the late '90s, the Cure reunited in 2009 to rock one of the most talked about Coachella sets ever. Already an established '80s British gothic rock band known for their mega-long shows, the Coachella crew literally had to pull the plug during The Cure's third encore in the middle of their international hit "Boys Don't Cry." This didn't keep the band from finishing the song though, causing fans to join in a giant sing-along.
