The 1989 film Parenthood, directed by Ron Howard and written by the incomparable team of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, was well-received and spawned two television series, one of which will soon begin a fourth season on NBC. The original film was an emotional roller coaster that captured what having kids is actually like, which is, well, a roller coaster ride. (It's in the movie, go watch it again.) Tom Hulce—Today
Mr. Hulce says that he stopped acting in 1998, although he occasionally shows up on screen, as he did in the 2008 film Jumper. He has returned to his first love, the theater, finding success as a producer of Broadway hits like Spring Awakening and American Idiot. He also produced the film A Home at the End of the World (2004).
