Erykah Badu’s greatest commercial success came from her first album, Baduizm in 1997, but she has released five albums in all and continues to work steadily. In 2010 she was in the news for filming a video for her song “Window Seat” where she stripped totally naked on a Dallas street in front of anyone who was in plain sight. Apparently this was traumatic for passersby, and for the incident, she was charged with disorderly conduct and forced to pay a $500 ticket. Badu's been working on her next album, but is taking her time on it. She most recently was featured on "Q.U.E.E.N" by Janelle Monae.

Indigo Girls, Lilith Fair, 1998

Besides Sarah McLachlan, the Indigo Girls, made up of Amy Ray and Emily Sailers, are the only artists to have made appearances in all four Lilith Fair summers.

Although the Indigo Girls have released nine studio albums, these days they self-produce their music on an independent label. Their most recent offering came out in 2011 and is called Beauty Queen Sister. Amy Ray and Emily Sailers are also extremely active politically, passionately fighting for LGBT and environmental causes, among others.

Liz Phair certainly has had an eclectic career. She started off as an indie rock darling with Exit to Guyville in 1993. She released two more albums, grabbed two Grammy nods, and joined Lilith Fair before releasing her more poppy self-titled album in 2003. She was criticized for “selling out,” but in reality she was just trying something new. Since then she has composed music for TV shows like 90210, and The 100. Her most recent album, Funstyle, came out in 2010. She says she is also in the process of writing a novel.

Natalie Merchant, Lilith Fair, 1998

The former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant appeared solo at Lilith Fair two summers—in 1998 and 1999.

Natalie Merchant, 2010

Natalie Merchant left 10,000 Maniacs in 1993 to carve out a solo career. She has released a total of five albums, including Tigerlily and Ophelia, which have been commercial and critical successes. Her most recent, Leave Your Sleep, came out in 2010 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard folk albums chart. Merchant just released a new album in May 2014.

Paula Cole, Lilith Fair, 1997

Paula Cole was headlining a tour with Sarah McLachlan when she had the idea to create the much larger Lilith Fair tour. She joined the tour in 1997 and 1998 on the main stage.

Paula Cole is probably best known as the singer of the theme song to Dawson’s Creek. The Grammy winner’s fifth album, Ithaca, came out in 2010, and she continues to perform around the country.

Sarah McLachlan, Lilith Fair, 1997

Sarah McLachlan was frustrated that women weren’t getting as much respect in the music industry as men. Turns out she was right. In 1997, Lilith Fair grossed $16 million and was the top touring festival of the year.

Sarah McLachlan, 2011

Since Lilith Fair ended in 1999, Sarah McLachlan has released three albums that all debuted in the top ten on the Billboard charts. She also works tirelessly for women’s charities, helping to raise millions of dollars. She tried to revive Lilith Fair in 2010, but it wasn’t quite the same and did not return again the next summer. (McLachlan also appeared in a pretty hilarious Portlandia episode as herself.) McLachlan has just released a new album Shine On and will begin touring the U.S. in June 2014.

Sheryl Crow is one of the most successful artist to have graced the Lilith Fair stage. She has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide and she has nine Grammys. She is a cancer survivor, a mother of two adopted boys, a cookbook author, and an occasional actress. Her most recent album, Feels Like Home, came out in 2013.

Sinead O’Connor will always be known as the woman who ripped up a picture of the Pope on SNL, but she’s also an accomplished musician, which is why she was a Lilith Fair headliner. Her personal life made headlines again in December 2011 when she married, and then separated 7 days later (take that, Kim Kardasian!), but the couple has since reunited. She also released How About I Be Me? (And You Be You?) in February 2012. While O'Connor is currently working on new music, she was recently in the news for her "open letter" to Miley Cyrus.

Since Pieces of You, which went 12 times platinum, Jewel has been busy. She released six more studio albums, two children’s albums, and two holiday collections. She wrote a poetry book, which sold more than a million copies, was a judge on an ill-fated reality show (Platinum Hit), and starred in a hilarious Funny or Die bitclip. She's currently working on her next album.

A former Vanilla Ice opening act, Alanis Morissette was fresh from the success of Jagged Little Pill when she joined the festival in 1997.

Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” may or may not be about Dave Coulier ("cut it out!"), but it did propel her to crazy success. Jagged Little Pill went 16 times platinum, and with the four albums that followed she has sold more than 60 million records worldwide. While performing at Lilith Fair, she even caught the attention of director Kevin Smith, who decided to cast her as God in Dogma. Her last album called Havoc and Bright Lights came out in 2012.

Post-Lilith, Fiona Apple released her second album, When the Pawn... (the full title has 87 more words), and then took a slight hiatus from music. She released Extraordinary Machine in 2005 and The Idler Wheel… in June 2012. She may be one of the kookier Lilith headliners, but she’s never boring.

Lisa Loeb, Lilith Fair, 1998

Lisa Loeb joined Sarah McLachlan and Paula Cole in 1996 at a performance in Canada that was first dubbed Lilith Fair. She joined the tour officially on the main stage for all three summers.

Lisa Loeb has released a total of eight albums in her career—most recently Camp Lisa in 2008. Her biggest hit, of course, is “Stay,” which still remains a karaoke favorite around the country. In 2005 she looked for love in the best place anyone can think of—on reality TV—and in 2010 she launched her own line of fashion eyewear.
