Marilyn Manson, then known as Brian Warner, attended a Christian school in Ohio from first grade to tenth grade, so we doubt there would have been much tolerance back then for his current antics and extreme style choices, which explains this pretty uninspired cut.

Industrial rocker Trent Reznor has led his band Nine Inch Nails since 1988 and also served as a mentor and producer to shock-rock singer Marilyn Manson. Seems both of these goth kings shared more than just a budding interest in music back in their pre-fame days: They both opted for conservative haircuts and stuffy button-down shirts.

How adorable was a young Peter Gene Hernandez (a.k.a. Bruno Mars) and his huge Afro in 2003! The Hawaiian-born singer was raised in a musical family and was performing onstage at an early age. Mars eventually cut off his baby locks to become the best-selling digital artist of 2011—looking very dapper in the process.

Travis Barker in 1993 and Now

The Blink-182 drummer started playing drums at age 4 and picked up trumpet, piano, and singing. He also joined his school’s madrigals group (yep, we had to look it up too: madrigals is a secular choir of the Renaissance era) as well as the jazz ensemble and marching band, making this awkward hairstyle a perfect choice for the ultimate band geek.

Michael’s unique hair may be the reason he became the frontman of the successful alt band R.E.M. Texas-born Robert Matthew Van Winkle, better known by his rapper stage name, is less “Ice, Ice, Baby” in 1986 and more “Yikes! Yikes, lady!” Luckily for Vanilla Ice and his rapping career, he chose to abandon his punk-rock locks for a blander (and often imitated) early-'90s fade with highlights in the front.
