If you were there for Season One of NYPD Blue, you'll remember Detective John Kelly as the brilliant and upstanding, young detective with a hero for a father. The cool-headed Kelly played the foil to his more hot-headed partner, Andy Sipowicz. However, Kelly's moral high ground goes out the window when he falls for uniform cop Janice Licalsi, a well-meaning beauty tied up in a legal and morals mess that causes Kelly to lose his job.

David Caruso—Now

Now, David Caruso continues to heat up the small screen as the popular Lieutenant Horatio Caine on the hit TV series CSI: Miami. Funnily enough, his character Horatio also worked on the NYPD, but then moved to Miami as a detective for the MPDP and was eventually made Lieutenant.

Nicholas Turturro as Sergeant James Martinez in NYPD Blue (1993–2000)

James Martinez initially joined the detective’s squad to fill in for Andy Sipowicz after the latter was shot in Season 1, but was later given a permanent position due to his apparent enthusiasm and hardworking nature. Before leaving the show in 2000, Martinez was transferred out of the squad after being promoted to Sergeant.

Nicholas Turturro—Now

After NYPD Blue, Turturro did a few guest-starring roles in police dramas and the occasional sci-fi thriller. Some of these shows were The District, The Twilight Zone, Third Watch, and Tremors. Since then, the Italian-American actor has focused more on comedies, beginning with a memorable supporting role in the Adam Sandler flick The Longest Yard. He followed that with I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, First Sunday, and most recently, Kevin James’ Here Comes The Boom.

Initially John was employed as a Police Administrative Aide on a temporary basis, but due to his adeptness and efficiency, he was given a permanent position on the police force. Despite his exemplary skills, John faced prejudice due to his sexual orientation (he was openly gay), particularly from the homophobic Andy Sipowicz. Still, it was hard not to like the sweet, soft-spoken, and boyishly handsome PAA, and he and Andy eventually became good friends, with John occasionally babysitting Andy’s son, Theo.

Bill Brochtrup—Now

Bill Brochtrup continued to be active in theatre following the series finale of NYPD Blue, appearing in various stage plays—most recently in The Antaeus Company’s production of Mrs. Warren's Profession. He also had minor roles in the romantic comedy films He’s Just Not That Into You and Life As We Know It. As for TV work, Brochtrup guest-starred in Dexter and Shameless. When he’s not acting, the actor spends his time supporting animal rescue organizations (he’s a “Friend For Life” of the SPCA) and hosting AIDS Walks.

Gail O'Grady played the spunky P.A.A. Donna Abandando. Her hip-hugging fashion choices caught the eye of Detective Greg Medavoy, who starts an extramarital affair with Donna. Unfortunately, Greg doesn't realize how genuinely Donna loves him until it's too late (despite leaving his wife) and their relationship falls apart, causing her to leave the office and take a job with Apple.

Gail O'Grady—Now

After long-running success on NYPD Blue, O'Grady went on to appear in similar crime shows like Monk and Boston Legal. Her most recent recurring role was on the series Hellcats, but you can also see her guest star on Hawaii 5-0, Castle and Major Crimes.

There’s always that one co-worker that everyone makes fun of, and at the New York Police Department, that was Detective Greg Medavoy. Neurotic and slightly awkward, Medavoy was usually the butt of every joke due to his uncontrollable stuttering and numerous allergies. But he eventually managed to earn the respect of his colleagues thanks to his excellent detective skills.

Gordon Clapp—Now

Gordon Clapp has worked steadily since the conclusion of NYPD Blue, with guest-starring roles in shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Deadwood, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Minds, Ghost Whisperer, and Damages. He also starred in The Game Plan with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and in Taking Chance with Kevin Bacon. Later this year, Clapp will star as a recurring character in the TNT police drama Lost Angels.

Jimmy Smits as Detective Bobby Simone in NYPD Blue (1994-2004)

For 10 years, Jimmy Smits played Detective Bobby Simone, who started off as a driver for the Police Commissioner gets his golden ticket when when Detective Sipowicz' partner, John Kelly chooses to transfer out of the 15th. Simone learns some hard lessons in the beginning but eventually finds his place, thanks to Sipowicz' guiding hand, but sadly passes away due to a heart condition the in the sixth season, shortly after marrying fellow officer Diane Russell.

Jimmy Smits—Now

After Smits decided not to renew his contract after the sixth season of NYPD Blue, he scored the role of Matthew Santos on the award-winning series The West Wing. Then he landed recurring roles on the TV shows Dexter and Outlaw, and can most recently be seen on the show Sons of Anarchy as Nero Padilla.

Arthur Fancy was one of the few African-American commanders on the force, which meant he experienced his fair share of bigotry. As Lieutenant, Fancy was the immediate superior of the openly racist Detective Andy Sipowicz, who eventually became more open and less prejudiced thanks to his influence. After nine successful years as lieutenant, Fancy was promoted to Captain.

James McDaniel—Now

James McDaniel left NYPD Blue during its eighth season, and has since appeared in a number of police procedural shows, such as The Division, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Numb3rs, and Detroit 1-8-7. He also guest-starred on a few drama and comedy TV shows like Las Vegas, Life As We Know It, and Love Monkey.

Andy Sipowicz was certainly the stereotypical police detective—extremely tough, a bit of an alcoholic, and hampered by his blue-collar sensibilities, which contributed to his racist and homophobic tendencies. Still, Andy was a decent man with a high sense of morality and a good heart.

Dennis Franz—Now

Since NYPD Blue, Franz has steered clear of the spotlight. He has not had any acting roles—both in TV or film—and lives a quiet life with Joanie Zeck, his wife of nearly 20 years. After having lost his father to colon cancer, the Emmy winner became a board member of the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance and has been involved in efforts to educate the public in the importance of getting screened for colon cancer.

Unlike the other women in the show, Sylvia Costas was not a police detective, but an Assistant District Attorney. Beautiful, elegant, and a thoroughly tenacious lawyer, Sylvia seemed an unlikely partner for alcoholic, blue-collar Detective Andy Sipowicz, but the two soon proved that they were a perfect match despite their initial contempt for each other. Sadly, Costas was killed in a courtroom shooting incident three years after their son Theo was born.

Sharon Lawrence—Now

Though she never really got another role that was as prominent as Sylvia Costas, Lawrence has had a steady stream of guest-starring roles since her exit from NYPD Blue. She made appearances in shows such as Ladies Man, Boston Legal, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Community, and One Tree Hill. In 2014, she will appear in the mystery thriller film Solace alongside Colin Farrell and Anthony Hopkins. Aside from acting, Lawrence is also a philanthropist and is an active supporter of World Wide Fund for Nature and Global Green USA.

Detective Diane Russell was one of the few female officers on the show, and despite being surrounded by testosterone, she was able to hold her own in the squad. When she wasn’t doing police work, Russell spent most of her time struggling with alcoholism, using the addiction as a sort of crutch to help her deal with some truly tragic moments in her life—like her mother killing her father, an unfortunate miscarriage, and the unexpected death of her husband, Detective Bobby Simone.

Kim Delaney—Now

Until recently, Kim Delaney enjoyed a starring role in the Lifetime drama series Army Wives as one of the leads, Claudia Joy Holden. After six seasons, however, Delaney left the show for unknown reasons. Prior to her Lifetime show, she made guest appearances in The O.C. and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
