No Doubt was originally formed in Anaheim, California, in 1986 by Eric Stefani (keyboard) and John Spence (vocals). Sadly, Spence committed suicide and the band regrouped with Eric, Tony Kanal as bassist, Gwen as lead vocalist, Tom Dumont on guitar, and Adrian Young on drums. The band signed with Interscope Records in 1990 but things didn’t run smoothly at first. Eric left the band in 1994, and Gwen and Tony’s seven-year relationship ended—which inspired many of their hit songs from
Tragic Kingdom (1995). But, that painful breakup translated to music gold! Fans couldn’t get enough of Gwen’s punky-yet-feminine style and wicked lead vocals in hits like “Just a Girl,” “Don’t Speak,” and “Spiderwebs.” The band had a hit on their hands, selling over 16 million copies worldwide and landing at 441 on
Rolling Stone’s “Greatest Albums of All Time.” No Doubt went on to release
Return of Saturn (2000) and
Rock Steady (2002).
