The 1989 film Parenthood, directed by Ron Howard and written by the incomparable team of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, was well-received and spawned two television series, one of which will soon begin a fourth season on NBC. The original film was an emotional roller coaster that captured what having kids is actually like, which is, well, a roller coaster ride. (It's in the movie, go watch it again.) Joaquin Phoenix in Parenthood (1989)
Oh, if paper bags could talk. Garry Buckman, played by Leaf Phoenix—he later changed his name to Joaquin—had something in that bag and didn’t want to tell his mother. In case you don’t remember, it wasn’t drugs. Young Mr. Phoenix showed some serious acting chops back in the day; check out this gut-wrenching scene when Garry calls his dad.
