A smart kid (to say the least), young Ben Bernanke was frustrated at the lack of a calculus class at his high school—so he taught it to himself. He went on to earn a 1590 out of 1600 on his SATs and become class valedictorian—and play saxophone in his school’s marching band. After graduating, he earned economics degrees from Harvard and MIT.
