Brenda Blethyn as Mrs. Bennet, Pride & Prejudice (2005)
“Good grief, woman. Your skills in the art of matchmaking are positively occult,” says Mr. Bennet (Donald Sutherland) to his wife in Pride & Prejudice (2005). Brenda Blethyn defends the aggressive Mrs. Bennet, telling the Telegraph that “I’ve always thought she had a real problem and shouldn’t be made fun of. She’s pushy with a reason. As soon as Mr. Bennet dies, all the money goes down the male line; she has to save her daughters from penury.” Her reasoning clearly resonates, as Blethyn’s portrayal of the blustering matriarch strikes fear into the hearts of any suitable bachelor, past and present.
