Detective Diane Russell was one of the few female officers on the show, and despite being surrounded by testosterone, she was able to hold her own in the squad. When she wasn’t doing police work, Russell spent most of her time struggling with alcoholism, using the addiction as a sort of crutch to help her deal with some truly tragic moments in her life—like her mother killing her father, an unfortunate miscarriage, and the unexpected death of her husband, Detective Bobby Simone.
