Eddie Murphy as James in Dreamgirls, 2006
Once a leading figure in American comedy, Eddie Murphy had hit a career slump by the mid-’90s. Gone were the edgy hits of his past, like Coming to America (1988) and Beverly Hills Cop (1984). Instead, there were Murphy films like The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002), which gained notoriety as one of the biggest box-office losers in the history of film. It wasn’t until 2006 when Murphy was back in full effect, as James “Thunder” Early in the critically acclaimed musical Dreamgirls. The role allowed him not only to flex his performance muscles, but to return to Hollywood legitimacy, with rave reviews and an Oscar nomination.
