In 2003, Schwarzenegger said hasta la vista to acting and took on a new role as California’s governor. With a one-two punch of his larger-than-life charisma and political legitimacy by marriage—his ex-wife, Maria Shriver, is from the Kennedy clan—Schwarzenegger won in a special recall election that saw the ousting of Gov. Gray Davis and birthed the state’s first-ever “Governator.”
