As a child in Colombia, Sofía Vergara grew up in a big family and attended private school. She started to earn a pre-dentistry degree before deciding to venture into modeling and acting in Miami. (Her first professional acting gig was in a Latin American Pepsi commercial in which she wore a bikini.) She was married and divorced very young and has a teenage son, Manolo, whose show on YouTube’s Nuevon, Mi Vida Con Toty, features frank talk about her eating habits (she doesn’t diet!), family life and more. In addition to hosting TV shows for Univisión and appearing in movies like Lords of Dogtown, Four Brothers and Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail, Vergara had roles on series including Dirty Sexy Money and Men in Trees before landing Gloria on Modern Family (for which she’s nominated as Choice TV Actress: Comedy). “I’ve never wanted to be taken seriously as an actress! That never even crossed my mind,” Vergara told The Advocate. “I don’t want to be serious. I’m not hoping to go read for a part in a serious movie, because I know the roles that I can play: They’re funny, and I love it.”
